COMMON NAME(S): Coffee senna, Coffee-weed, Florida-coffee, Styptic-weed, Wild-coffee
FAMILY: Leguminosae - Pea family
HABITAT: Waste areas, open areas, along roadsides
ALLERGENIC PRINCIPLES: Roots, fruit and leaves with oxymethylanthraquinone. Seeds with emodin glycosides (anthraquinones) and chrysarobin (a toxalbumin).
COMMENTS: Roasted seeds used as a coffee substitute and are used medicinally. Tea made from the leaves is used externally for skin diseases and internally as a laxative. Toxic to livestock.
